Agni the digestive fire
The concept of Agni, the Sanskrit word for “fire,” is rather essential to the Ayurvedic
tradition. In
Ayurveda, Agni (fire) is viewed as the source of life.
It’s literally the gatekeeper of good health for all metabolic functions
in the body. Everything you eat is looked upon as an offering to Agni. A weak digestive system leads to
weakened Agni.
According to Ayurveda, harmful
foods, such as fried foods, processed meats, and very cold foods, can create an undigested residue that forms toxins. When Agni is balanced, it tends to support strong
immunity, and long, healthy life.
The strength
of Agni is inevitably affected when its qualities are muted by a poor diet,
improper food combinations, an unsupportive lifestyle, emotional disturbances,
or even damp, rainy weather.
